PROGRAMME

16-18TH November, Linz, AT

Sabine Marte

16.11.2022 | 12:30-13:30 PM | Wohnzimmer (ZBM), 4OG, Domgasse 1

Step behind the ropes please! No.2
Step behind the ropes please! No.2 is based on a so-called true story from a "true-crime" TV program in the United States. Sabine Marte is less interested in the story itself (tracing a crime and the persons implicated in it) than the way in which the scenes can be read and perceptual processes can be manipulated. In her video performance she stands between audience and TV images, intervening from this position in the mediatized content.

IN A MANNER OF SPEAKING (Video installation)

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian language has remained Kazakhstan's second official language. The most used and dominant. This work is an irony of the current post-colonial language situation in Kazakhstan. The people on the recordings who are perfectly “speaking” Kazakh are Kazakhs, who do not speak at all or speak at a very basic level. The videos have been manipulated using Deepfake technology so their mouths move convincingly as they speak that language which they don`t speak in a physical reality. So to say, within this media they are having an alternative persona who speaks its mother tongue…in a virtual space.

WOVEN MEMORIES (Workshop)

In the Woven Memories workshop, participants will learn to create emotionally resonant soundscapes made from heartfelt audio interviews on subjects relevant to participants, particularly issues of queerness, appearance, and belonging.

Participants will learn to write effective interviews, record, cut, and edit their interviews, and use this edited audio with custom software to create performable audio soundscapes. During the first part of the participants will form groups to write and conduct interviews, and time-allowing, will cut and edit these interviews into soundclips. In the second part of the day, participants will be provided with pre-cut audio (or their own audio, if there was time to edit it) and custom-made software, and with these tools, will create soundscapes.

Participants need no prior experience to participate. Participants will need to bring their laptops and may be exposed to emotional questions and answers during interviews. Participants will be held to a high standard of care and respect for their fellow participants. You will be expected to work in a feminist, anti-racist, LGBTQ friendly, and above all, loving environment.

THE HAMSTERFISHBIRD
The HamsterFishBird is composed of a skinned hamster torso, bird feet as arms and a fish fin. Preserved! So it could be a KnikPicture. A.k.a. Cadavre Exquis which translates into delicious corpse. As a former animal pediatrician, I work a lot with non-human, dead animals and thus also work on the concept of speciesism. The HamsterFishBird is the most wrong work I have ever made. It shows the most negative sides of a human being. This superiority, which human animals imagine over non-human animals, is the reason why we also so disrespectful with each other and the environment.

FLEETING AMUSEMENT(S) (Video installation)
Rethinking an essayistic video about online communication by literally embedding it in a roulette game. The success of online communication seems to be as much a game of chance. Visitors can try their luck at gambling themselves.

CARRIER BAG FOR STORIES OF LOSS | Mourning carrier: threading new bonds and spinnings of tales (Workshop)

In her essay the carrier bag theory of fiction Ursula K. Leguin retells the evolutionary story of technology by centering the carrier bag, the net, the sling at the beginning of human ways of sustaining interaction. A narrative of domination is replaced by recalling one of sharing and responding. The carrier bag gathers and puts in relation; A collective gathering of stories of loss and vulnerability. Opening up a space for carefully sharing our grief, vulnerability and to re-write our personal and collective stories of loss. We will be collectively writing and articulating a lament, exploring sound as a performative tool for loss. Engaging a dialogue with our pasts and our shared futures. Probing embodied utterances that invite us to inhabit landscapes of circular narratives.

RECONNECTING

The project speaks of the artist’s relationship with their own body and how they rediscovered sensuality by excluding the rules of gender binarism, in the curves of their shapes considered feminine by society. Through objects and moments experienced in contact with sexuality, the artist re-appropriates what makes them feel understood and embodies a new role.

FUTURE MEMORIES OF DEEP WATER (Intro)

What are the changing conditions for Archaeology in underwater ecosystems? Can challenges b predicted and solutions imagined using Machine Learning? With the passage of time, underwater artifacts are encrusted with coral, algae or other marine organisms. How do human activities and pollutions undermine these natural environments? What
will our underwater heritage be like in the future? “Future Memories of Deep Water” explores how algorithms can be used for predicting new
entanglements between underwater artifacts and the changing environment where they are discovered. We reflect on current problems and dangers for marine environments, such a “plasticrust” and plastic pollution. Built upon experimental speculation, Future Memories of Deep Water calls for the protection of threatened marine ecosystems and aims to create awareness and encourage preservation of cultural heritage.

The video Future Memories of Deep Water [intro] aims to introduce the artwork and research that was conducted between 2021 and 2022. The video has been premiered during ISEA 2022 - 27th International Symposium on Electronic Art Barcelona in the screening program.

Stareanabyss is a sound performance in constant development, in which, through the live mixing of processed field recordings and computer-generated music; layers of audio are juxtaposed one to the other, resembling the transit through an imaginary space, in which sound is the key that opens the doors.
